Heirloom: Nicholas Bailey

Nicholas Bailey and his vintage (and bilingual!) Seiko watch.

We’re back with another edition of our Heirloom series, this time featuring Nicholas Bailey (also known as @nicksaysgo) and his vintage Seiko watch.

Nicholas is one of those polymaths that makes you wonder how they do all the things they do — in addition to being a lifestyle blogger, photographer, and host of a monthly radio show, he also works full-time as a head of technology for Fortune (!). Most importantly, Nicholas is one of the warmest souls I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR HEIRLOOM.

This watch is a beautiful, vintage Seiko Lord Matic from 1970. It’s fully stainless steel, so still substantial even though it’s a bit lightweight. It’s pretty banged up from my few years of use, plus the 5+ decades it’s been around before I got it — but honestly, that’s what I love. My favorite thing about it is that the day of the week changes from Japanese to English throughout the day, back and forth.

WHERE DID THE PIECE COME FROM?

I actually purchased it from eBay Japan from a seller specializing in vintage Seiko timepieces. It was a nice gift to myself after going without something on my wrist for a decent bit of time. Me and this bad boy are just about a year in and I couldn’t be happier.

HOW DO YOU WEAR IT?

To me, this is an everyday piece. I’m never really the type to save items for special occasions. In a way, I want to get the most use out of all my things — no matter how nice or mundane. Whether I’m suited up, in a throwback jersey and shorts, or even going to the office — it’s on my wrist.

WHAT DO YOU ENVISION FOR ITS FUTURE?

I would love to be able to hand it over one day and pass it down, God willing. It’s such an interesting piece with great style and craftsmanship — I wanna see it live on as long as it can. Maybe when Nick Jr. comes around (one day lol).
